The Minerals and Gems in Dreamlight Valley are an important part of many quest lines and can be used to make a good amount of Star Coins. However, unlike farming resources, mining resources are more difficult to come across and there is only a slight chance that black mining rocks (without gems poking through) will spawn a gem.
Although each gem is worth quite a few Star Coins, personally, I do not sell (or gift) ANY of my gems unless it is a requirement of a quest.
Don’t forget to keep a mining buddy with you to increase the chance of getting gems.
